2000-04

Keeping the Faith: A Prison Project, Seattle, WA; Phoenix, AZ; Cincinnati, OH; Dublin, Ireland
An outreach arts and performance program of the Pat Graney Dance Performance Co. focusing on women prisoners. Visual artist team member. Invented themes for art projects and created visual elements/sets for performances.

2002

recuerdo  (after Tomas Rivera) University of Texas, San Antonio, TX
Project focusing on the work of Tomas Rivera, Chicano poet, writer, academic and human rights activist. The work includes poems by Rivera and takes its theme from his signature work y no se lo trago la tierra (and the earth did not swallow him) about a boy in a Mexican migrant family.  The project covers four walls and a pillar adjacent to the Tomas Rivera Center.

1999

myself inside your story, Archer Gallery, Clark College, Vancouver, WA
On site drawing project focused on my mother and the women in her family. Accompanied by impromptu discussions with students regarding heritage, homage and the Middle East. Exhibition of paintings and drawings accompanied the two week residency.

1993

A Canvas of Episodes Port of Seattle, Seattle, WA Site specific project commissioned by the Port of Seattle for its headquarters. The piece is integrated directly into the architecture on two levels of the atrium at the west end of the building. Paintings, text, steel and photo-etched tiles are placed at intervals throughout the space, using pillars, stairs, and main wall (front and back). The imagery refers to three themes: old to new, (the site was a ruin on the waterfront capped with a new structure); sea to sky, (the principal transportation venues of the Port); and culture to culture, (the Port is a global business).

1992

Quiet Room University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle, WA
First in a pilot project for artist designed spaces. Adjacent to the surgery department, the room is intended for use by staff and patient families for consultations and meditation.  Components: frescoed walls, gouache paintings, embedded photograph, customized floor of laminate and slate, furniture of wood, steel, sapling and metallic naugahyde. Commissioned by the Hospital Public Art Program.

Boushay Solarium (Memorial to Frank Boushay)Bailey/Boushay House, Seattle, WA
Conceived, designed, and executed memorial solarium in Bailey/Boushay House, the first new long term and critical care facility built for people with AIDS. Included endgrain flooring, sapling railing (old and new), madrona veneer, frescoed walls, gouache paintings, copper memorial pillar, relief plaster text, memorial tributes to Frank under the flooring.  Key components relate to the cycle of life, as researched from cross cultural references and through direct conversations with people living with AIDS. Collaboration with Beliz Brother. Commissioned by AIDS Housing of Washington.

In Place University of Washinton School of Art Gallery, Seattle, WA
On site drawing using the gallery as a studio and the walls as a canvas; executed over a two week residency that included slide lectures to graduate sculpture and painting students as well as undergraduate drawing classes.

Find the Syrian Boys Bellevue Art Museum, Bellevue, WA
Commissioned installation exploring artist’s Lebanese heritage and family’s immigration experience based on correspondence between father and grandfather. Included: frescoed walls, names in relief, uprooted tree, honeycomb aluminum table, family photographs and water.

1990

Akbar’s Muse 911 Contemporary Arts Center, Seattle, WA
Installation for “Origins: Experiences in Multiculturalism,” a project for the 1990 Goodwill Games Arts Festival. Window and interior sited piece that included world map, painted symbols, doors, projection, wall drawing, family letter, and spices. Based on the Diwani Kaas (Hall of Special Audience) build by the Emperor Akbar at Fatepuhr Sikri, a site seen by the artist in northern India.
